Imagine the page you are looking at is the front of a freezer. (May sound mad but this analogy has helped many of my assistants understand what is going on in the page.)
The front of the freezer is the template which offers the basic design of the site. As such it might have the brand name and even some sort of design, moulding, freezer life notes for contents etc. The point is that there are some items which are given and can only be altered during manufacture of the freezer. The template here is a bit more flexible. If we decide to change elements on the template I can do it within certain parameters. These are pretty wide but there are some impossibilities. One can also use a different template for different pages but that should be done with care for the corporate identity.

- breadcrumb (tells you where you are in the system) e.g. <You are here: Home
News Around the World> - an area for articles
- around two dozen positions where modules, banners, copyright may be placed. Imagine placing fridge magnets on your freezer. They can be placed in one site and then moved to another. The only static element is the one for articles, even if this may not appear so when modules are added.
